Joe is an aquatics engineer (BSME) specializing in Life Support System (LSS) operations and design implementation. He is a former LSS operator with decades of hands-on experience. Joe worked for 10 years at the San Diego Zoo as the Director of Water Quality. Before that, he was the life support manager at the Albuquerque Biological Park where he oversaw the construction, start-up and daily operations of the half-million-gallon aquarium. Prior to that, he was the LSS Engineer for the Brookfield Zoo’s million gallon marine mammal LSS. After 20 years of operations, Joe traded his wrench for a calculator and put his engineering degree to use. He worked as an LSS design engineer, managing projects worldwide and developing schematic design, design development and construction documents, including detailed project specifications and construction management. As part of Aquatic Operations Group, he has teamed with owners, design engineers and contractors, providing guidance for pipe installation, LSS drawing and specification implementation, equipment installation, submittal and RFI review, control systems, start-up, commissioning, operator training and O&M manuals.
Joe is a founding member of AALSO (Aquatic Animal Life Support Operators) and was directly responsible for creating the LSS Operator Certification Program. He lives in San Diego with his too-good-for-him wife and his pretty-much-out-of-control kids.
